In Footsteps of BHS

Howard Leavitt '47 Writes and Writes and Writes

Howard Leavitt '47, has published his first book, Footsteps of David - Common Roots, Uncommon Valor. He has always had an interest in the military, especially in regards Jewish participation. Even prior to graduation, he joined the Marine Corps Reserve. Called to active duty following graduation from American University in 1951, he served two years including seven months in Korea.

Returning to the States, he worked for a couple of years, he went to Mexico and got his MA at the University of Mexico. With his wife and daughter, he returned to California where he taught Spanish and French for thirty years, worked in school attendance for four years, was a substitute teacher for four years, and began to devote his time and energy to writing about Jews in the military. Now his first book, Footsteps of David has been published (self-published) by 1stBooks Library, and his second book, Semper Chai! - Marines of Blue & White (and Red) (published by XLibris) will be released in March. Completing the trilogy, his third book, Tales of Valor, is nearing completion and should become available sometime in 2003.

Footsteps of David has been well received by readers. Leavitt has received quite a number of compliments expressing appreciation that this subject, rarely recognized and covered, has finally come to light. It reveals that the role of Jews in defense of their country has been significant and deserves to be made a part of our history.
