Fall 2002 Newsletter

Jerome Grossman ‘34, is married with three children. He graduated from Harvard University in 1938 and is happily living in Wellesley, MA. Sid Brown ‘35, is well and has been living in Dedham since 1949. Harriet (Gurwitz) Suvalle ‘36, celebrated her 61st wedding anniversary on March 8. She is living in Delray Beach. Jacob Malkin ‘37, sadly reports that his wife Charlotte passed away last September. Marysia (Chmielinski) Small ‘38, is planning a move to Silver Spring. She reports that she is doing well. Sister Dorothy Hart ‘38, has been a Sister of St. Joseph for the past 65 years. She tutors students at Mt. St. Joseph Academy in Brighton, MA. Arnold Zieff ‘39, is enjoying his retirement, spending time with his four children and nine grandchildren. Pauline (Levy) Levine ‘39, recently celebrated her 80th birthday with four generations of her family! Rev. Nathaniel Page Lauriat ‘39, reports from Sedona, AZ: “I am still healthy and pleasantly active!!” Shirley (Freedman) Davis ‘39, is living in Wellington, FL with her husband. She has two children, the youngest of which, Lawrenc e, has just been appointed Chief of Nuclear Medicine at Long Island Jewish Hospital! Philip P. McGeoghan ‘39, has 8 children, 21 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren!!! Norrie MacPheestill feels like he is the class of ‘39 even though he didnt graduate until ‘40. He reports that he is spending more time on the computer and less time in the garden, but still manages to keep 6 acres of grass cut with his John Deere!





Summer 2001 Newsletter

Barbara Chmielinski ’31 is currently planning a family reunion. Elizabeth Cameron Baker ’34 reports that ‘no news is good news!’ She is living on Cape Cod. Bernice Gurwitz Rothstein ’35 is a travel consultant for Delray Beach, Fl. Her daughter Susan is a travel agent in Ma. Helenka Currens ’35 reports that her famous classmate was Mike Wallace. She has 4 daughters and 1 great-granddaughter. Nancy Weston Hanscom ’36 is a retired school teacher and her husband is a practicing attorney. Their two children and four grandchildren live nearby their home in Sanford, Maine. Harriet Gurwitz Suvalle ’36 celebrated her 60th anniversary in March 2001. The celebration was attended by many family members, including Harriet’s sister, Bernice Rothstein ’35. Jacob Malkin ‘38 reports that he and his wife have celebrated their 50th anniversary. Sr. Dorothy Hart, CSJ ‘38, a “religious” since September 1938, now tutors at Mt. St. Joseph Academy in Brighton, MA.She totally enjoyed her 50th class reunion. She also calls attention to the death of Frank D. MacDonald ‘38. Henry Paro ’38 retired as a judge from the US court at the end of May ’00. Ronald Downey ’38 is still going strong. He has been married for 56 years! Miriam Alpert ’38 sadly reports that Jean Scheinfeldt ’4 died after a long illness. William Smith ’37 will be 83 in June. He has had two heart attacks and a gall bladder operation but is fine now! He lives in Florida. Moses Malkin ’37 and his twin brother Jack ‘37 live in Sun City Center, FL. He retired in 1993 as president and actuary of his firm. He and his wife Hannah have been married for 60 years and still enjoy travel! Helen Adams Amerman ’37, visited her sister Jane Adams Toumanof and George at their chalet in NH. Helen has won 4 blue ribbons for her quilting this year! Ettabelle Sidd Mann ’37 loves living in Florida. She grows orchids, roses, birds of paradise and fantastic mangoes! Sandy Sachs ’37 enjoyed celebrating Larry Gordon’s 80th birthday along with fellow classmates. Bette Hudson ’38 now has three great-grandchildren - all boys! Barbara Bechtold Byrne ’38 is still active, and manages to get into Boston occasionally for the opera. Gabriel Freedman ‘38 writes: “My wife Muriel and I plan to celebrate my 80th birthday10/9 on the Atlantic Ocean, west-bound, on the second leg of our transatlantic cruise this fall, touching such places as England, France, Portugal, the Azores, Spain, St. Marten, and San Juan. It beats work!” Winnifred Ross Kimball ’38 has 4 great grandchildren. Jane Farrell Spence ’38 reports that her husband died in 1985 of Leukemia. She also sadly reports that her daughter Judy Kennedy died in 1993 of cancer. She travels with her son Rob and his wife Martha. Dick Brownell ’39 sadly reports on the death of Wally Rankin ’39. Walter Daisy ‘39 writes that he and his wife, Marguerite spend their winters in southern Maine, then head up to Rangeley, Maine for three months to keep cool. They have five children and 10 grandchildren. They welcome anyone contacting them on wedgecyberttours.com. Harriet Hirshfield ’39 is a volunteer tour guide for the Central Park Zoo in NYC. Alvin McNeilly ’39 reports that lobstering continues to be good in Owl’s Head, Maine. Warren Goodman (Goody) ’39 reports that he found his old friend and classmate, Al McNeilly, through the BHS alumnae news and spent two days with him in Owl’s Head, catching up on old times! Dick Sisson ‘39 and his wife Mitzi are alive and well in St. Louis. He is retired from a career in surgery. They have 4 children and 8 grandchildren.




 
Fall 2000 Newsletter

Friends of Lola Talbot Johnson Hubbard '30, will be saddened by the news of her death last year. A graduate of Radcliffe, she and her husband Al Hubbard lived in Tennessee and then relocated to Maine. For many years she maintained her own business there. She is survived by her husband, their children Laura and Andrew, and six grandchildren. Ruth A. Hicks '32, keeps in touch with a number of BHS alumni by way of birthday and Christmas cards. Charles Gerstein '33, is still active in the stock market and jokes that at his age, it is time to retire! Charles Drysdale Small '34, died February 6, 2000 from prostate cancer. He is survived by his wife, Marysia (Chmielinski) Small '38. Our condolences to Marysia, who still works part-time in Kensington, MD. Jerome Grossman '34, a writer, lecturer, radio commentator and activist, is currently the chairman of the Council For a Livable World. He was an arbitrator for the NYSE until 1998. Barbara (McCue) Gillis '34, sends her greetings back to Bob Whittier. She spent October and November in California and then plans on spending the holidays in Germany with her son Jay and family. Ruth (Orenberg) Hollis '36, is living in Wayland. She has three married children, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren and enjoys travel. Henrietta (Medalia) Taylor '36, is enjoying life in an independent senior residence close to Washington, D.C. and her son Bob. Her major activities include travel, volunteering at the White House and playing bridge. Gilda Levine (Warshaw) Mechem '36, is the proud grandmother of 10 and great grandmother of two. She lives in Gloucester with her second husband of seven years, Dick Mechem. She notes that she, too, will never forget Stan Livingston, profiled in a previous newsletter. Her first husband, Phil Levine '34 and Stan were on the track team together. Francis (Cummings) Sevick '36, is retired and she and her husband enjoy spending time in their Sausalito home. Ray Silton '36, served in the South Pacific in WWII, and had a 41-year career in his own ad agency. He tried to retire in Florida in '89, but couldn't resist a second career: He's now an executive vp of a computer service company. In '84 he had two bypass surgeries, then continued his love of skiing in the U.S. and Europe. He has been happily married to Lorraine Dunlop for 14 years. He's also a painter, a published poet and piano player, and of course, the author of our recent story on alum Stan Livingston. Richard (Weinstein) Weir '37, celebrated his 81st birthday by flying a Cessna 172 airplane for an hour up and down the Santa Barbara coastline. With his wife and daughter in the back seat and an instructor to supervise, he reports that this was his first time in 20 years flying unassisted! What a birthday present! Talbot Allen '37, sadly reports that his best friend since 6th grade, Louis Cox '37, died this past spring of Parkinson's Disease. About the same time, Talbot's youngest son died after a heart attack at the age of 52. Then shortly after turning 80 this year, Talbot had what appeared to be a stroke. The good news, he points out, is that he paid his BHS Alumni Association dues! Ginny (Robinson) Hyde '37, enjoyed reading the Stan Livingston article, adding that anyone who knew him was lucky, since he was a true role model and a great guy. Mel Fincke '37, is living in Peoria, AZ and has been married to the same woman for 53 years, a rarity these days, he points out. He was interested in the Stan Livingston article since he knew Stan well. Barbara (Abrams) Feldman '38, thanks Ramon Silton for the lovely eulogy to her dear cousin, Stan Livingston. It brought back many memories. Channing Orbach '38, is still alive and skiing! Al McNeilly '39, returned to Maine after 35 years with Exxon. He became a lobsterman - he is still at it! He is also a partner in a small country store in Owls Head. Dick Brownell '39, sadly reports that his good friend Ed Grant '39, died on January 23, 2000. He also reports that Mary (Metzler) Szafarz lost her husband in December of 1999. We send our condolences. Norrie MacPhee '40, (Class of '39) keeps healthy by maintaining his 13 acres in New Hampshire. He encourages those who live alone to get a computer and get on the Internet. His e-mail is norrie@empire.net Mary (Moore) Wilkinson '39, is living in South China, Maine and enjoys reading the newsletter twice a year. Alvin Goldsmith '39, is living in Boston with his wife of 52 years, Enid. They have two children and six grandchildren. They recently bought a condo in Miami. Louise (Dillon) Downey '39, sadly reports the death of her husband, Alan Downey '37, in June 2000.




 
Spring 2000 Newsletter

Charles Gerstein '33, was the best all-around athlete in the Air Force in 1943. He received a Medal of Honor from the French Government in WWII for his efforts in helping to rebuild the French Air Force. He points out that he learned French at BHS! He retired as a Captain. Marie (Osgood) Polisner '33, reports that her family is growing: she now has three children, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Abraham Grossman '34, had heart bypass surgery in February 1999. He divides his time between Chestnut Hill and Naples, FL. Robert Whittier '34, wishes to say "hi" to Barbara McCue '34, as they lived in the same apartment house for many years as children. Janet Printz Kaplan '34, reports that she and her husband are the proud great-grandparents of three children, the oldest being five years old. Morton Freed '35, is in good health, happy, and living in Delray Beach, FL. Alma (Shoolman) Goldman '35, is living in Chestnut Hill. She loves the Alumni Newsletter. Bernice (Gurwitz) Rothstein '35, is still an active travel agent in Delray Beach, FL. Arthur Allen '35, is one of the few remaining alumni of the Putterham School. He is living in Jamaica Plain, MA. Andy Holston '35, and his wife Libby celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary in October 1999. They have six grandchildren. He is retired after 37 years with the airlines. Their leisure time is spent traveling, and Andy keeps busy with the local Rotary Club and as a volunteer with the local hospital. When they're in Boston, they enjoy visiting with BHS '35 classmates including Alice and Joe Quinn, John Esposito (recently deseased) and Bill Coughlin. Harriet (Gurwitz) Suvalle '36, reports that grandson Rick Suvalle sold two scripts for the television show "VIP" produced by Pamela Anderson Lee. They have already been shown on television! Arnold Levin '36, says he has no news...he's just a year older! He is still associated with Livingston & Haynes in Wellesley, MA, limiting his practice to taxation and estate planning. Elizabeth Woodbridge '37, reports that she's "alive and kickin'" and enjoys traveling in the U.S. and abroad...Helen (Adams) Amerman '37 is a quilting teacher and has received three blue ribbons for her quilt projects. She has five children and three and a half grandchildren. She enjoys travel and especially enjoyed a trip to Norway n a cargo boat last summer. Bernerd Bloom '37, has enjoyed living in Wayland for the past 14 years. His family consists of his wife, two adult sons, their wives, and four grandchildren. He is happy to report that everyone is enjoying good health! Mary (Maginnis) French '37, is still teaching ballroom dancing at her Cape Cod studio. Edna Kelleher '37, is 81 years old and still kicking! She says it's the good "Brookline Air." She tries to get to California once a year, and to the Cape in the summer. Sara (Sher) Finer '37, has been married for 59 years. She and her husband have two children and three grandchildren. They keep active by going to the fitness center, playing golf and traveling. Mel Freedman '37, has spent most of his professional years writing ads, songs, plays, and just this week, a movie called "Oh SoHo!" He notes, "I can truthfully say that some of my warmest memories come from BHS...the kids, the teachers, the townΙwhat a launching pad for a thousand careers. And bless you, our mentor, Miss Louise Hannon." Joseph Osgood '38, had a pleasant family reunion with his sister, Marie (Osgood) Polisner '33, to celebrate the marriage of Marie's granddaughter in Palm Beach. Bernice (Silverman) Becker '38, sadly reports that her husband of 59 years passed away on May 16th, 1999. She does volunteer work telling original short stories and memoirs. She says she loves her beautiful retirement community in Springfield, but she still misses Brookline. Bob Berman '38, plans to resume his golfing and saloon piano after enduring a medically rough year. He and his wife Penny have purchased a condo in Florida and plan to winter there. Bob enjoys drawing political cartoons, playing e-mail chess, composing songs, selling crossword puzzles, becoming computer literate and learning watercolor painting. Ruth Pearson '38, is still living in the same house in Lynnfield for the past 50 years. Her husband passed away in 1979. She has three children and five grandchildren. Gabriel Freedman '38, managed to cruise around the world in 1999, visiting such places as Korea, China, Japan, Russia, Portugal, Spain, France, Malta, Italy and England. Joan Pinanski Morse '38, is playing clarinet in the Boston College Concert Band and a Senior Jazz Band after classical training with Gordon Joslin and William Burbank. We are sorry to report that Donald Schein '38, died in 1998. His wife Bernice says that he enjoyed reading the newsletter. They were married for 55 years and have five daughters and 11 grandchildren. Fran Flannery '39, just returned from her 14th yearly vacation in Florida. Priscilla (Nagle) Healey '39, has 21 grandchildren and says she enjoyed last year's reunion very much! We are sorry to report that Gerard Finnerty '39, passed away in October 1993. Dick Johnson '39, celebrated his 52nd anniversary with his wife Barbara in Los Angeles. He reports that she does the driving; he helps by pointing out pedestrians! Richard Brownell '39, sadly reports that his good friend and classmate, Joe (Florin) Amrhein, died in Virginia in 1999. Shirley (Grodberg) Kuperberg '39, has been living in Houston, TX for 27 years. She is on her third career: substitute teaching for the Houston schools. She has been a widow since 1972 and has two wonderful daughters and three granddaughters. She enjoys traveling, painting, bridge and the arts. David Solomon '39, reports that he and Ronnie Markson are still doing fine. David still works part time in medical research and enjoys his family a great deal.




 
Fall 1999 Newsletter

Barbara (Wade) Clmielinski '31, reports that she is enjoying her six children, 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She fills in her time doing a bit of painting and is still driving and traveling to Spain and Florida. Marie (Osgood) Polisner '33, lives in California and recently attended a 'Relative Party" in Boston with a group of folks who graduated Brookline High. Charles Gerstein '33, was the left-hand tournament winner on the Brookline Golf Course in 1962. The Alumni Association would like to thank him for his generous donation to improve the Alumni office! John Heard '33, is living in North Kingston, RI. He reports that he now has three great-grandchildren. Barbara (McCue) Gillis '34, met up with Mildred Sullivan '33, by chance in a beauty salon after overhearing the word 'Brookline" being used in conversation. Alma (Shoolman) Goldman '35, is living in Chestnut Hill, MA. She plays duplicate bridge twice a week and is now an American Contract Bridge League Gold Life Master, holding more than 2,700 master points. Aaron Levine '35, is the founder of the Institute for Learning in Retirement, University of Cincinnati and received an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. He was also elected to the Ohio State Senior Citizens Hall of Fame in 1996. Geraldine Maxon '36, reports that she is still living in Brookline and is involved in senior activities through the Council on Aging. She is involved with the YOU club-Youth and Oldsters United, is an associate member of the Pierce School Quilters and volunteers through her church at the Brookline Food Pantry. Jane Lepska '36, reports that she and her husband George visited the Black Canyon of the Gunnison River near Crawford, Colorado. She reports that it was "spectacular." Henrietta (Medalia) Taylor '36, reports that they have been doing a lot of travelling, preferring river cruises. While at home, she works as a White House volunteer. Melvin Fincke '37, reports that his cousin, Bertram Freedman '37, recently passed away. We send our condolences. Jeanette (Volz) Doetsch '37, worked at Chase-Vought Alrcraft Plant after graduation, then enlisted in the Navy and worked as a control tower operator for four years. She married a Marine, Matthew, then returned to Brookline and raised three daughters. She worked for many years at State Police Headquarters and is now retired. She also served as commander for 11 years and still is going strong! She has three grandchildren-one a BHS grad. Bernerd J. Bloom '37, has been married 56 years and retired six years. He keeps active doing volunteer work at Brigham and Women's Hospital, playing tennis and traveling occasionally. Mary (Maginnis) French '37, is still teaching ballroom dancing and keeping up with the new fad- salsa-swing! Talbot Allen '37, is semi-retired and is living with his wife, a home health aide, in Norwood. He reports that he has bad luck with wives-his first two died and his third left. He married his fourth wife four days after his 75th birthday (so he wouldn't need his parents' permission, he says!). He operates a small delivery business for an independent supermarket and liquor store. He would love to hear from any classmates who remember him. Muriel (Ruben) Gold '37, is enjoying bridge, arts, travel, Family and friends. Joseph Osgood '38, and his wife Maggie just returned from a three-month snow ski vacation at Reno, Lake Tahoe. Hilda (Abrams) Robbins '38, reports that she has loved living in Vermont, but is planning a move to Davis, California, sometime in February or March, near her younger son, daughter-in-law and 15 alpacas! Rabbi Alvan Rubin '38, reports that he and his wife Ruth Ann, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past June. Ruth (Helpem) Wallace '38, is living in Longmeadow, MA, with her husband. She is the owner of the "Most Wins" title at the Crestview Country Club. Robert S. Raymer '38, (USCGR Retired) is living in a retirement community called Leisure World in California, which has six clubhouses, five pools and 15-20 hobby Facilities. He works at lapidary, or stone grinding. Marysia (Chmielinski) Small '38, is still working part-rime at the Washington Clinic in D.C. She does lots of volunteer work and has been married to Charlie Sniall '34 for 56 years. Barbara (Bechtold) Byrne '38, went to the Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown with Mary (MacAleer) Merritt '39, and her husband this past August. Winnifred (Ross) Kimball '38, is living in Connecticut and has three great-grandchildren. Bette (WilIett) Hudson '38, says that although her dear husband passed away in June 1993, life goes on and she now has a six-year-old great-grandson Toby and an 11-month old great-grandson, Benjamin. Dick Johnson '39, is alive and well. Alvin Goldsmith '39, graduated from Boston University in 1943. He was a skipper in the US Navy until 1946. He then established International Merchandising Corporation, which he ran until 1986. He is now semi-retired, has been spending winters in St. Barts and the Caribbean, and is now in the process of moving to Florida. Reverend Nathaniel Lauriat '39, is living in Sedona, AZ. He reports that all is well. L. Richard Johnson '39, is living in Los Angeles within 20 minutes of two of his sons. He has one son in San Diego and a daughter in Santa Barbara who has three boys. Ed Orde, Sr. '39, is a retired sales executive who is married to Doris, his wife of 55 years. They have two children, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. They live in Freeport, IL, in the summer and winters in St. Petersburg, FL. Robert Lundblad '39, refuses to believe the "rampant rumors that our alumni checks are actually funneled into Mel Wolf's Swiss bank account!"




 
Spring 1999 Newsletter

Helen (Passmore) Mawhinney '31, went to Alaska this past summer, taking a cruise from Vanouver to Seward. She's planning to visit Normandy, France for the D-Day Celebrations in June (her husband jumped into Normandy with the 101st!). Marie (Osgood) Polisner '33, notes that San Francisco is a great place and she hopes someone from her class comes to visit. She's planning a trip to Boston in June and would love to see old friends. Charlotte (Ginsberg) Lockwood '33, is a very proud grandmother: grandsons Taylor '97 and Russell Hansen both went to BHS and made National Honor Society. Caroline (Reich) Haley '33, is seeking Judith (Judy) Gorman '33. Anyone know how to reach her? Margaret (Green) Benjamin '33, reports that she is still playing bridge! Elizabeth Baker '34, notes some sad news: her husband, George H. Baker '36, died last year. Abraham Grossman '34, recently celebrated 59 years of marriage. Barbara (McCue) Gillis '34, spent this past Christmas in Germany with her son and his family. Arnold B. Levin '36, celebrated 50 years of marriage with the same woman (Elsie August) last year. He is still associated with Livingston & Haynes, P.C. in Wellesley, MA, with whom he merged his public accounting practice in 1986. Morton Myerson '36, and his wife Eleanor (Applebaum) Myerson '39, report that they are typical retirees, enjoying tennis and golf and spending winters in Florida and summers in Cape Cod. Col. Norman Adelson '37, of Mentor, Ohio, died in June 1998 of a heart attack. We send our condolences to his widow, Phyllis. Jane (Adams) Lazar '37, enjoys the alumni newsletter, especially reading about classmates from 1930-39! Gabe Freedman '38, is keeping busy with visiting family, daily workouts and swim, duplicate bridge, traveling and volunteer work. His musings: gigantic five-cent sugar cones (chocolate marshmallow, of course), at St. Clair's on Beacon Street; meat knishes for "a nickel a shtickel" at Rubins Deli; dancing to the Big Bands at the Totem Pole Ballroom in Norumbega for $1.40 a couple; waving to Clarence DeMar as he ran past Coolidge Corner in the Boston Marathon, FREE! Joan Pinanski Morse '38, says a recent high point was running into Mel Wolf '39, in a local Staples and reminiscing about their days in the BHS Band. Joan, a licensed independent social worker, currently plays clarinet in the Boston College Concert Band and the Newton Senior Jazz Band. Barbara (Bechtold) Byrne '38, now has five granddaughters. She visited Ireland in November, dug deep into Celtic history and confirmed that the Irish saved civilization (I think with Irish humor!). Shirley (Freedman) Davis '39, reports that she and her husband, Dr. Ed Davis, again chaired the Florida Atlantic Region's Hadassah Women's Health Symposium last December. This past February, Mel Wolf '39, and wife Ruth (Feinsilver) Wolf '43, had the pleasure of sharing lunch at the Del Coronado Hotel in Coronado Beach, CA with BHS and Devotion School classmate Mel Rosencranz and wife Betty. Dr. Morton C. Wilson, '39, retired from the practice of urology seven years ago but stays active medically by acting as medical director of nursing homes, hospice units and assisted care facilities.




 
Fall 1998 Newsletter

Ruth B. Towers '31, reports that she still works part time as a church secretary. She is living in Chatham, MA. Ruth Alexander Hicks '32, recently celebrated her 83rd birthday. She is still active in her church and the Order of the Eastern Star. Margaret (Green) Benjamin '33, is living in Wollaston, MA and still plays bridge. John Heard '33, is living in North Kingston, RI. He reports that he now has three great-grandchildren. James Bagley '33, is still working as a consultant and enjoys his three great-grandchildren. He is still married to the same great woman he married in 1939. H. Bruce Ehrmann '35, has no big news to report other than he is enjoying retirement and is keeping busy! Aaron Levine '35, is the founder of the Institute for Learning in Retirement, University of Cincinnati. He was also elected to the Ohio State Senior Citizens Hall of Fame in 1996. Andy Holston '35, is living in Playa Del Ray, CA and is interested in finding out whether there are any upcoming reunions planned for the classes of '34, '35 or '36. John McEvoy '36, reports that he is still going strong, although his golf game is slightly down. He recently saw Tom Donahue '36 and Nancy (McCabe) Donahue '35. Phyllis (Slaman) Litchfield '36, retired 20 years ago as a cost accountant. She now lives on the Cape and is a widow with three children, four grandchildren and one and a half great-grandchildren. Dan "Pee Wee" Macdonald '37, is alive and well and living in Wellesley, MA. He celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary in May 1998. Edna (Finnerty) Kelleher '37, is retired and travels annually to California. She spends her summers on Cape Cod. William Edward Smith '37, traveled to England this June. He lives in Indialantic, FL. Louis Cox '37, has been married to his wife Mary for 51 years. They have two children and four grandchildren. Mel Fincke '37, reports that he is getting older and more crotchety. He is living in Peoria, AZ and states that although his face may have changed over the years, his voice remains the same! Helen (Adams) Amerman '37, has done a lot of traveling. She still teaches quilting and won a blue ribbon this spring for one of her quilts. Robert Berman '38, is living in Bushkill, PA and awaiting the birth of his first great-grandchild. He and his wife Penny celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary in May 1998. They both stay busy with travel, community politics, local music and old friends. Channing Orbach '38, is still living at Venice Beach, enjoying leisure and skiing. He has three grandchildren. Robert Rines '39, retired as founder and Chairman Emeritus of Franklin Pierce Law Center upon the dedication of the Robert Rines Building there. He was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1994 for the radar high-definition imaging systems used in the Gulf War and sonar imaging. This past year, Nova did a documentary on his 1977 research with the Academy of Applied Science at Lochness, Scotland. Robert splits his time in Boston and Concord, N.H. His sister, Joan (Rines) Needleman '32, died in 1997. Elizabeth (Barry) Chisholm '39, has been in the Quabbin Community Band since 1970. She is still playing the cornet which she says is easier to handle than the trombone. Shirley Davis '39, and her husband Dr. Ed Davis were recently honored at the Florida Atlantic Region of Hadassah's 13th annual Spring Conference for excellence in public relations and their commitment to the organization. Robert Moore '39, says "aloha" to all BHS grads, especially the class of '39. He is living in Honolulu, HI. Edward Zimmerman '39, is living in Baltimore and has been married to Selma for 51 years. They have two sons and three grandchildren. He sails and motors his ferro-cement 60-ft home-made yacht around the Chesapeake. He recently hosted Mel Wolf '39 and Ruth Feinsilver Wolf '43 on their annual visit. Arnold Zieff '39, is keeping busy in retirement and enjoying it with his wife Sylvia (Rubinoff) Zieff '43. They especially enjoy their four married children and four grandchildren. Mary (Moore) Wilkinson '39, and her husband John celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June. It was a family event which brought children and grandchildren from all over New England. Mel Wolf '39, a Harvard, sea-going naval officer in WWII, made usual stops in the Pacific and was present in Tokyo Bay at surrender. Mel dabbled in men's outerwear manufacturing, then went from "rags to bottles" in packaging distribution. Along the way, he continued as a professional sax player, backing many headliners from Liberace, Sammy Davis, the Temptations, Bert Bacharach, Bob Hope, to Whitney Houston, Aretha (at Clinton's first inaugural ball) plus many others. He is married to Ruth (Feinsilver) Wolf '43, and has produced four children, all BHS grads! They have 13 grandchildren. Mel retired from business in 1990, but assumed several volunteer jobs as treasurer and secretary of various non-profits. He is enjoying his special job as treasurer and database manager of the BHS Alumni Association, Inc. He really enjoys hearing from grads from all classes, starting from '19 right up to the present. And...like the Energizer Bunny....he is still playing!

Helene (Passmore) Mawhinney '31 recently took a cruise through the Panama Canal. She stopped off in Florida to see Francis Bulter Klein '36. Barbara (Wade) Chmelinski '31 is living in Duxbury, MA. She has six children, 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Marie (Osgood) Polisner '33 would love to hear from any Brookline alumni visiting the San Francisco area. Her phone number is (650) 588-8817. Charles Gerstein '33 and Ed Rae '33 ran the 50th reunion of the class of 1933 at the Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge, MA. It was a great success, attracting 125 people! Jerome Grossman '34 is married with three children. He is a writer, radio commentator and a teacher. Among his many current activities: chairman, Council for a Livable World, director of the Peace Political Action Committee and lecturer at Palm Beach Community College. Ruth Rosenfield-Freedman '34 recently celebrated her 81st birthday and has lived in Lake Worth, FL for the past 23 years. Edna Hibel '34, a well-known Brookline High alum, came home to New England with a historic birthday celebration. On October 18 and 19, she exhibited her work at the Marriott Hotel in Westborough, MA. Alma (Shoolman) Goldman '35 received an achievement award in September 1997 from the Greater Boston section of the National Council of Jewish Women for her 50 years of volunteer service to the organization on a local, national and international level. Talbot Allen '36 married Phyllis Adams on June 1, 1995, the day after his 75th birthday (so he wouldn't need his parents' permission, he reports!). He has three children of his own and nine stepchildren. Herbert Patterson '37 has been married for 54 years. He has four children and 11 grandchildren. Both he and his wife attended their 50th college reunions last spring. Melvin Freedman '37 is living in New York City. He writes screenplays. Mary (Maginnis) French '37 is still dancing and teaching in Florida and Massachusetts. Jean (Barkin) Waldstein '37 is living in Chestnut Hill, MA. She says that the 1937 60th reunion was a great success, and is looking forward to the 65th in 2002! Barbara (Bechtold) Byrne '38 is living in Newfields, New Hampshire in joyous retirement. She says that she is living in an old house and is involved in many activities. She would love to hear from old classmates. Tom "Ferg" Ferguson '38 is living in Honolulu, Hawaii. Although he says his trips to the East Coast are infrequent, he does read the Globe daily on the Internet. He has a daughter and grandson living in Massachusetts. He says, "BHS was the finest secondary school in the nation during the turbulent years of the '30s; it served me, and countless others, in preparing us to face the future." Miriam (Scheinfeldt) Alpert '38 returned to Paris this year, and is looking forward to another visit next year. Solomon B. Levine '38 reports that he now has six grandchildren scattered around New York, Nashville, and Wisconsin. He and his wife will celebrate their 54th wedding anniversary this year. They are still active in amateur and professional activities. Gabriel Freedman '38 just finished circumnavigating the globe this year. He climbed the Great Wall of China. He is living in Fort Meyers, FL, and would love to hear from any alumni. Joan (Pinanski) Morse '38 is still a social worker at Boston College Campus School. She continues to play the clarinet, write and ride her bicycle. Barbara (Abrams) Feldman '38 is happily married to her husband, Max. They live in Los Angeles and Malibu, and keep busy running between the two residences. She and her husband are both retired-he from dentistry and she from teaching. Dan Cadiff '39, is living in Tiverton, RI and Rancho Mirage, CA. Robert Moore '39, is living in Honolulu, Hawaii. He reports that he is serving as an Episcopal Church Deacon and does volunteer work with the homeless.

Barbara (Wade) Chmielinski, '31, is living in Duxbury, MA. She has six children and would love to hear from anyone in her class. Chester Litman, '31, is living in Scottsdale, AZ and volunteers as a teacher's aide at a public school. He still plays tennis and is looking forward to celebrating his 60th wedding anniversary. Florence Dunbar, '32, is an avid swimmer and has won many senior events. Hazel C. Levine, '33, is living in Brookline. She retired from the US Customs Contracting Office. Charles Gerstein, '33, visited with Edna Hibel '34, and her husband, Todd Plotkin at their gallery on Edna's 80th birthday. Rosalie (Tootsie Weinstein) Simon, '33, has married Edward Simon after being widowed twice. James Bagley, '33, has been married for 58 years, has two sons, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He is 81 and still working, writing and lecturing. Jerome Grossman, '34, has written his memoirs, "Relentless Liberal," published by Vantage Press. Edith Whitcomb Quigley, '34, married Charles Cavanagh, who died in an accident in 1951. She remarried in 1982 and has three children and three grandchildren. She lives four months in Cohasset and the rest of the time in Florida. Janet (Printz) Kaplan '34, is living in Cambridge. She and her husband have three children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Richard F. Spears, '34, is living in Marion, MA and is sorry to report that his brother, Donald E. Spears, '33, passed away in October 1996. Bert Litman, '34, retired in February of 1997. He and his wife Fran recently sold their home and moved to a condo. They're headed for Italy where they will help celebrate his brother's 60th anniversary. Andrew J. Holston, '35, is happily retired from the airlines and just celebrated his 50th anniversary. He has two children and five grandchildren. Paul T. Hennessy, '35, is still living in the "Point" section of Brookline. He has been associated with Brookline Youth Hockey for 18 years. He is a former captain of the Wampatuck Country Club golf team, although he reports that he never had a hole in one! Dr. Arnold S. Gale, '36, has been retired since March 1981. He reports that he is in relatively good health. Henrietta (Medalia) Taylor, '36, is living in Washington, D.C. and is a White House volunteer. Alice (Austin) Phillips, '37, has been living in Elmira, NY since 1940. She has two daughters and four grandchildren. Albert J. Tennant. '37, is very proud of his three granddaughters and two grandsons. Two recently graduated from college, one is entering her senior year and the youngest is an honor student heading off to high school. Carleton M. Bergere '37, headed to Chicago at the end of WWII. He was a contractor in the remodeling industry for 46 years and is now semi-retired. Ronald and Betty (Minnis) Downey, '38, are living in Wakefield, MA. Ronald just celebrated 50 years in his own dental lab business. He also conducts the Wakefield Retired Men's Band. Abbie (Hirschant) Millen, '38, is living in Cocoa Beach, FL and would like to contact grads in that area. Hilda (Abrams) Robbins, '38, is living in Manchester, VT and stays busy visiting with friends and family. Miriam (Scheinfeldt) Alpert, '38, is living in Brookline, MA. She volunteers with the AIDS Action Committee, and is planning a return visit to Paris soon. Barbara (Greenbaum) Rosen, '39, is living in Delray Beach, FL. Leah (Helpern) Ottenstein, '39, spends most of her time in Belmont, MA and is an active volunteer. David D. Montague, '39, sadly reports that his wife of 53 years died in 1996. Our thoughts and sympathies are with him. Wayne H. Ross, '39, and his wife, Grace (MacDonald), '40, are living in Florida and are enjoying life to its fullest. Rev. Nathaniel Lauriat, '39, is living in Sedona, AZ. Shirley (Freedman) Davis, '39, has been featured in "Who's Who in Medicine and Health Care." She is living in Wellington, FL. Philip P. McGeoghan, '39, was honorably discharged from the Army Air Corps after 20 years of service. He is the father of eight, and sadly reports that his wife is deceased. Frederick J. Mehlinger, '39, is living in Wareham, MA and is a retired widower. He would like to hear from old friends or classmates. Lesner White, '39, sadly reports that his wife, Betty (Kahn) White, '40, passed away in 1995. Melvin P. Rosencrantz, '39, reports that he and his wife, Betty, just returned from California, where they winter. They have eight grandsons and a new baby grandaughter!
